Rupam Islam, the lead singer in the poular Kolkata based Bengali rock band 'Fossils' is the son of Late Nurul and Chhandita Islam, both of whom were involved in a musical choir group 'Jhonkar Shilp Goshthi'. He started performing from a very early age, and was featured in Akashvani regularly. He graduated from Ashutosh college with English honours and took a job as a teacher in a school.Rupam's first album (solo) was 'Tor Bhorsathe' released by HMV. the tracks such as Neel Rong chhilo Bhishon Priyo became immensely popular. in 1998 he formed the band Fossils. The band released 4 albums, all of which became very popular. Apart from being the vocalist, he also writes lyrics and composes the music for Fossils. Besides, the band, he is involved in many solo projects, chat shows, radio programme and many more. In 2006 he released a book 'Epitaph'. later he also wrote a book called 'Rupan on the Rocks' published by Ananda publications.In 2007, he made his hindi playback debut in the superhit movie Jannat starring Emran Heshmi. Rupam has done many Bengali playback too, including Chalo Lets go, Olot Palot, Jiyo Kaka etc. As of today, Rupam Islam is a one of the most sought after personality in Bengali music scenario. He is also often criticized for his short temperament and emotional outbursts.He is married to his long time friend Rupsha Dasgupta.
